Yilan Chen Skokie, Illinois University of Chicago, Class of 2013 Yilan emigrated from China two years ago and began taking ESL classes.After a year, she was able to master AP courses. Passionate aboutchemistry, she has represented her high school in competitions at theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has conducted researchwith Ph.D. students at the University of Chicago. Besides academicexcellence, Yilan is also active in her community. She volunteers at apreschool and participates in Relay For Life. Initiating a reliefproject in conjunction with the National Honor Society to help thevictims of the earthquake in China, Yilan showed great altruism andoutstanding leadership. Moreover, her part-time job at the schoollibrary has brought her appreciative commendation from teachers andclassmates. From all those experiences, Yilan believes that“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one afteranother.” Yilan is looking forward to majoring in biochemistry andwants to become a doctor and continue playing the flute at theUniversity of Chicago. She thanks QuestBridge for giving her this greatopportunity to achieve her dream.

Kwan Tang Brooklyn, New York Williams College, Class of 2013 Known as \"Jenny\" to her friends and family, Miss Tang's ability toevade sleep is surpassed only by her love of art and proper footnoting.Born in China and raised in New York City, Jenny has spent herformative high school years helping to raise her younger sister, Helen,and still managing to pass her classes at Hunter College High School.Jenny has spent substantial time in New York's museums; she has workedat The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Noguchi Museum, and The Museumof Modern Art. Her friends warn others not to ask her about art, sinceJenny is known for delivering long lectures, sometimes accompanied byslide shows. Jenny is also the Editor-in-Chief of her school newspaper,and therefore alternates art lectures with diatribes about journalisticintegrity. One friend remarked, \"I will miss listening to hercoffee-crazed rants to staff writers.\" QuestBridge's amazingscholarship will allow Jenny to study art history at Williams College.

Debbie Yang Allen, Texas Parsons The New School for Design, Class of 2013 Debbie Yang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. When she was six years old, herfamily immigrated to America. She was immediately fascinated by theblend of cultures in one country. Debbie vividly remembers the newexperiences and the countless number of friends that she made along theway. Her optimistic view of the world allows her to take on challengeswith the intention of improving herself. While undertaking rigorouscourses in school, she volunteered as an attorney at Teen Court formore than five years. Debbie actively participates in National HonorSociety, National Art Honor Society, and many other clubs. She is verygrateful for the support and encouragement of her parents and heryounger brother, Arthur. Most importantly, she will always be indebtedto QuestBridge. The scholarship program has unlocked many gates ofopportunities for her that she could not have imagined. While attendingParsons the New School for Design, she will devote herself to the studyof fashion and fully utilize the educational opportunities that lieahead.
